Conference
Description
Biological reactive intermediates are chemicals that initiate non-enzymatic
reactions with cellular macromolecules following enzymatic reactions that
occur in vivo under specific conditions.
The International Symposia on Biological Reactive Intermediates (BRI) began
30 years ago and has been held every five years in the following locations:
- University of Turku, Finland (1975)
- University of Surrey, Guildford, The United Kingdom (1980)
- University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland (1985)
- University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona (1990)
- GSF Forschungszentrum and Technical University of Munich (1995)
- Université René Descartes, Paris, France (2000)
This
year the conference is being hosted by the Southwest Environmental
Health Sciences Center of the University of Arizona, held at
the Westin La Paloma Resort. The interest and enthusiasm of contributing
speakers, presenters and
authors continues to grow. The science is at the cutting edge of Toxicology
and is being adopted in the fields of genomics and proteomics.
Studies of mechanistic toxicology and queries into the utilization of data
from studies of biological reactive intermediates in the risk assessment
process highlight the relevance of the symposia.
