Overview of University facilities & cores

By presenting these microscopy and/or imaging related facilities in a tabular format, we hope to make it easier for users to see what is available on the University of Arizona campus. The links below go directly to the facility's home page, if one exists.

Facilities highlighted in yellow are considered part of the Cellular Imaging Facility Core.

Tissue preparation & staining for light microscopy
Histology Service Lab (CMM) Andrea Grantham
(626-4415)
AHSC 4212 Routine paraffin (embedding, sectioning & staining) and frozen section (sectioning & staining) histology and special stains.
Tissue Acquisition & Cellular/Molecular Analysis Shared Service (TACMASS) Kathy McDaniel
(626-2448)

AZCC 3959 Routine paraffin and frozen section histology.  Tissue microarrays.  Automated immunohistochemical staining with over 80 human and mouse antibodies.
DMetrix microscope slide scanner Lynne Richter
(626-2796)
AHSC 5210 Can scan an entire 1x3 glass microscope slide in color at 20x. Exports digital images of the scans in a variety of file formats and magnifications.

Microscope with color CCD camera for routine light microscopy imaging?

There is also a lower resolution color camera (710x512) on an image analysis workstation in the AZCC (no support contact). For greyscale images, see the CMM Image Acquisition & Analysis workstation (below). Individual labs and departments may have this type of equipment, ask around.

*** SWEHSC investigators should contact Mr. Cromey for information about a microscope like this that is available through the generosity of one of the Center's labs.

Fluorescence-related
ARL Confocal Microscopy facility Doug Cromey
(626-2824)
LSN 410 Zeiss LSM 510Meta-NLO multiphoton confocal microscope.
Cancer Imaging Shared service Carl Boswell
(954-7053)
AZCC 0953

Nikon PCM2000 confocal, 3 color imaging of fixed samples.

Leica SP5 resonance scanning confocal, multi-color spectral imaging, high-speed imaging.

Keck Center for Nanoscale Characterization Brooke Beam
(621-3395 )
Chemical Sci 135 Nikon spectral confocal and a multi-line TIRF instrument.
Cytometry Shared Service Paula Campbell
(621-2047)
AZCC Full service flow cytometry and cell sorting. If you are interested in quantitating fluorescence intensity, flow is the way to go.
Intravital microscope Urs Utzinger BIO5 Microscope stage can accommodate small animals for microscopic imaging of organs and tissues. Multiphoton, as well as fluorescence lifetime imaging. Access is limited.
In Vivo Bioluminescence Brenda Bagget MRB 130 & BRL Whole animal imaging using internal bioluminescent probes and high-sensitivity camera. Part of SWAIR (see below).
Research Microscopy Core Service (Medicine) David Elliott (626-7870) MRB 330M Deconvolution fluorescence microscope.  Ideal for low-light samples.  Has capability for time-lapse imaging of live cells.
Electron Microscopy, AFM and SPM
AHSC Imaging Facility Tony Day
(626-6009)
LSN 410 Biological transmission electron microscopy. Tissue processing, sectioning and microscope operation.
Keck Center for Nanoscale Characterization Paul Lee Chemical Sci 135 Atomic force and Scanning probe microscopes.
University Spectroscopy & Imaging Facilities

Al Agellon Phil Anderson
(621-5097)

Marley 101 Transmission & Scanning electron microscopy facility, primarily materials sciences oriented, but can do biological samples..
Computerized Image Analysis
CMM Image Acquisition & Analysis workstation Doug Cromey (626-2824) LSN 429 Inverted microscope with multiple imaging modalities and 10bit greyscale CCD camera.  Can perform time-lapse imaging on live cells with this instrument.  SimplePCI Image analysis software can be used for counting, measuring, and analyzing images from any source. Users perform their own analysis with assistance from Doug Cromey in setting up the semi-automated software macros.

Note, identical image analysis software exists on a workstation in the AZCC, however, there is no designated support contact to assist users.
Scientific Visualization Lab (UITS) Marvin Landis Campus Computer Center 3D reconstruction and visualization. Immersive 3D environment.
Radiology imaging
Southwest Animal Imaging Resource (SWAIR)     Part of ARIBI. Includes Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT), Biological Magnetic Resonance (MRI), Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), and in vivo bioluminescence (see above)
