Georg Wondrak Receives UA Cancer Center Director's Challenge Award for Therapeutic Development

Georg Wondrak, associate professor in the UA College of Pharmacy Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, has been selected to receive the UA Cancer Center Director's Challenge Award for Therapeutic Development. This inaugural award of $75,000 is presented for the development of a novel therapeutic with high potential for clinical translation. The title of Wondrak's winning application was "Autophagy-Directed Anti-Melanoma Intervention Using Amodiaquine." His project aims to re-purpose the antimicrobial amodiaquine, a drug used clinically worldwide to target malaria parasites, for experimental intervention to block certain adaptations of drug-resistant melanoma cells. Wondrak's application was chosen from 13 submissions by a review team of three local bio-pharma industry investigators and three UA health sciences academic faculty. (Read More)
