The SWEHSC is a collaborative interdisciplinary research center that is actively investigating the health effects of environmental agents and serving as a resource for the community. The common goals of the SWEHSC are to facilitate the extension of basic research discoveries into translational research initiatives and to expand and enhance community outreach and education in environmental health.

Pilot Project Program
The Southwest Environmental Health Sciences Center (SWEHSC), an NIEHS funded Center at the University of Arizona, announces the availability of awards up to $40,000 for pilot projects involving research related to the mission of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences
and the Center.

Arizona Mass Spectrometry Consortium
Lau served as Co-Director to create the Arizona Mass Spectrometry Consortium for the entire university. This Consortium provides an administrative structure for campus-wide existing facilities including Proteomics Facility housed in Pharmacy, and Molecular Mass Spectrometry housed in Old Chemistry. Future goal is to include to-be-developed Centers such as Inorganic Mass Spectrometry in Geo Science and Water Contamination Center at Gould Simpson. Read more....

Center Renewed for 5 More Years! 2006-2011
The Southwest Environmental Health Sciences Center (SWEHSC) was refunded for 2006-2011 to continue continue its research on the health effects of environmental agents. The center serves as the principal resource for interdisciplinary research and graduate education in environmental health within the Southwest region of the United States. Read full article
TCE (Trichloroethylene) Contamination and
Cleanup Curriculum
The COEP received a competitive EPA Environmental Education Grant to develop and implement curriculum about the TCE contamination and cleanup in Tucson in late 2005. A team of classroom teachers from the neighborhoods in the area most highly affected by problem, SWEHSC scientists, and experienced COEC curriculum developers are working together during the summer of 2006 to complete the curriculum to be piloted during the 2006-2007 school year.
