Research Project:
Alfred is investigating mechanisms behind retinoid-induced
cytoprotection of Ischemia Reperfusion Injury, with a focus on the involvement
of antioxidant gene regulator Nrf2. Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) affects
approximately five percent of all hospitalized patients. One major cause of AKI
is renal ischemia reperfusion injury (IRI). IRI induces damage via initial
hypoxia due to blockage of renal blood flow and the immune/oxidative response
upon subsequent blood reperfusion. Retinoids are a class of compounds related
to vitamin A and have displayed roles in the cell progression and homeostasis of
tissues. IRI is shown to be ameliorated with retinoid pretreatment in in
vitro and in vivo models. |
