Wesley Cai
Wesley Cai is currently a sophomore at the UA, and majors in Biochemistry. His focus is on cell signaling pathways through which the translation and transcription of the protein cyclin D1 occurs, primarily mTOR, GPCR, and MAPK pathways. He works with and under the guidance of Nick Mastrandrea and Kim Tham on unearthing the mechanism by which a particular drug decreases cyclin D1 amounts in renal cancer cells. Wesley joined Dr. Lau’s lab in the summer of 2011 through UBRP and is funded by the aforementioned as well as ASPET. He also does some freelance website designing on the side. He plans to pursue the field of pharmacology and continue work on cancer.

Yurika Isoe
Sponsored by the Bio5 institute and Southwestern Environmental Health Sciences center, Yurika Isoe has interned in Dr. Serrine Lau’s lab since the summer of 2011. She does this through the KEYS program, which offers high school students an opportunity to experience scientific research in a professional lab environment. Yurika shadows Jessica Sapiro and Alfred Gallegos as they pursue the the cytoprotective mechanism(s) of all-trans-retinoic acid against reactive oxygen species induced cell death.

Itzel Rojas
Itzel Rojas has been working in this lab since June 2010, when she approached Dr.
Lau about doing research in the Lau lab for her Senior Thesis. The
purpose of her project is to determine if an imidazole
compound synthesized in our lab (3-(1-Methyl -1
H-imidazol-2-ylthio)-propanoic acid confers cytoprotection from reactive
oxygen species generated in the event of ischemic/reperfusion injury.

Senior, Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics, University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ

Audrey Shi
Audrey Shi is a junior Biochemistry major at the University of Arizona. She is working on generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) with arsenic in macrophages and researching the role of iron in arsenic induced ROS. She has been working in Dr. Lau’s lab since the summer of 2010 and has joined through UBRP, funded partially through ASPET.

Kim Tham
Kim studies the role and regulation of cancer biomarker proteins cyclinD1 and p27 in chemically induced renal cell carcinoma. We elucidate signal transduction pathway modulation of these proteins through cAMP mediated Rap-GTP/B-Raf MAPK. She initially joined the lab as a member of the KEYS program and has continued her research, supported by UBRP and ASPET, in the Lau laboratory over the course of her undergraduate career at the University of Arizona.
