NIH-funded research conducted in the Wondrak laboratory examines the role of the skin environmental exposome in health and disease. The molecular involvement of solar ultraviolet (UV) light in skin damage, aging, and carcinogenesis is being elucidated, and interactions with other relevant environmental factors such as chlorinated freshwater (in the context of recreational swimming pool use) are investigated. Given the essential role of drinking water chlorination in global public health we have recently engaged in molecular studies examining for the first time how chronic exposure to chlorinated drinking water impacts gastrointestinal epithelial and systemic health, a topic of concern two billions of consumers worldwide exposed to disinfectant-treated drinking water.

Environmental research interests - Oxidative stress, redox homeostasis, skin photodamage and aging, skin exposome, electrophilic environmental stressors, chlorination stress, drinking water
