The metabolism of arsenic refers to the way in which the substance is absorbed and excreted.  The efficiency of an individual’s metabolism of arsenic could dictate their risk of contracting disease.

  • RFG 1 is studying the gene that is so eloquently dubbed “AS3MT”.  This gene is responsible for the metabolism of Arsenic and its isolation could provide relief for populations that are at higher risk for exposure to the toxin.
  • Research has also shown that when an individual is exposed to very high levels of the toxin, that the body’s ability to metabolize it has been inhibited.
  • Further study has shown that the chromosome surrounding AS3MT (chromosome 10) reveals an unexpected amount of linkage disequilibrium when exposed to Arsenic.  Linkage disequilibrium refers to the variation in genotypes present at one locus.  This phenomenon could contribute to the effect of toxicity on an individual.
