The demographics of the southwest follows the larger trend of an aging population. - This project utilizes samples from the Women's Health Initiative cohort, including participants from Tucson to measure inflammatory protein markers in blood and genetic variants in DNA to understand the underlying pathogenic processes in sarcopenia.
- Data analysis currently in progress. NIA/AG027979
- Dr. Chen was awarded a pilot project to study a local cohort of sarcopenic women to test the hypothesis that arsenic exposure is associated with a pro-inflammatory state, and indirectly to muscle loss and loss of bone mineral density. NIEHS ES06694
