PFAS Multi-Site Study & Open House
PFAS Multi-Site Study & Open House
The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) and the Agency for Toxic Substances and
Disease Registry (ATSDR) have recently released the first report including information from the
PFAS Multi-site Study (MSS). The MSS is a national cross-sectional study that investigates
health outcomes associated with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) exposures among
residents of communities with contaminated drinking water. This is currently the largest PFAS
study to date to look at exposures across multiple sites, including sites in California, Colorado,
Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. This
report outlines key findings regarding PFAS levels in participants' blood, including:
- Some level of PFAS were detected in the blood of almost all MSS participants.
- Overall, younger female participants (12-49 years) had lower levels of most PFAS than
male participants. - Adult participants in the MSS have higher average levels of two PFAS (PFOA and
PFHxS) than adults in the U.S. population. - Child participants in the MSS only had higher average levels of one PFAS (PFHxS) than
children in the U.S. population.

On July 28, 2025, ATSDR and MSS research partners will hold an open house to discuss the
study, its findings, and future plans. The open house will be held from 2:00 PM to 3:45 PM MST
for all study participants, MSS community members, and the general public. If you have
questions about the PFAS Multi-site Study that you would like to be addressed during the open
house, please submit them in advance to mss@cdc.gov. To add this event to your calendar and
