Five University of Arizona faculty members have been recognized with some of the nation's highest honors for their contributions to science, education and mentorship. The prestigious Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching and Mentoring and the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers highlight the university's commitment to fostering excellence in teaching, research and community impact.

Researchers from the University of Arizona Cancer Center and Northern Arizona University (NAU) recently published a study on how vaginal microbiomes could contribute to the higher rates of cervical cancer in Native American women.

UA mentor training is a two-tiered process. Level 1 is accessible online, with videos featuring the basics of mentorship, such as establishing a connection. One way to establish a connection is through sharing your academic story. The mentor and mentee can speak to one another about how they arrived in their current roles, asking questions such as “How did you decide to become a toxicologist?” or “What inspired you to become a teacher?”. Questions about their career journey or what’s involved in one’s role can help the mentor and mentee connect through shared experiences.

Science cafés are just what the name implies: casual events where scientists and the public hang out and talk about science. Naturally, the former do most of the talking with the latter asking questions. But in the more than 25 years since the first science cafés were held in France and the United Kingdom, these events have increased in popularity worldwide.

Are you a faculty member at the University of Arizona with a collaborative research idea relating to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)?

RII has made $50,000 available to fund three proposals from university faculty for collaborative research related to PFAS. Proposals must involve a partnership between two or more colleges, and the funding is slated to begin in January 2025.
