Doctoral candidate Tuo Liu will be mentored by Melissa Furlong, PhD in the laboratory of Jeff Burgess, MD, MPH. His newly funded work will study the correlation between fire exposure and cancer in firefighters.

With the goal of promoting translational research, our Pilot Program helps facilitate innovative research on the mechanisms underlying environmental health risks and disease among people living in arid environments experiencing climate change.

We had another great summer as the Southwest Environmental Health Sciences Center’s Community Engagement Core (CEC) hosted a series of impactful summer programs from May to August. Over these months, each program—ranging in duration and start/end dates—provided students from middle school through community college with valuable experiences in environmental health, research, and professional development.
