UA Receives $2.98M for Collaborative Study to Reduce Hazardous Chemical Exposure in the Workplace

It is a common problem for many small businesses to use harmful chemicals that are linked to asthma, cancer, cardiovascular and neurological diseases. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a 22% increase in the number of fatal work injuries by exposure to harmful substances or environments. In response, the University of Arizona is conducting a study on two high-risk industries -- auto repair shops and beauty salons - on the south side of Tucson that employ primarily Latino workers. The researchers at the University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health have received a five-year, $2.98 million grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences to fund the study.
