When

2:30 – 3:30 p.m., April 18, 2025

Please join us this Friday, April 18, for a Science Cafe at Woods Memorial Library. Dr. Nathan Cherrington, our Center Director and an Associate Dean of the College of Pharmacy, will be discussing interindividual variability and phenoconversion.

What makes one person more susceptible to environmental toxins than another? We often think it's genetic - one person's metabolism is better at processing toxins out. However, if an individual lives with a disease state, such as liver disease, or even under heat stress, this person can be more susceptible to environmental toxins regardless of genetics. This is called "phenoconversion," where health and environmental factors make an individual appear to be someone who is genetically susceptible to toxins.

This is important in understanding how health factors and environmental factors, such as excessive heat, can influence someone's reaction to a toxin in their daily life.
