The Biosensors Laboratory at the University of Arizona (directed by Associate Professor Jeong-Yeol Yoon) is researching various biosensors and microfluidic applications. Smartphone- and paper microfluidic-based detection has been developed for water, air, and clinical samples. Viral pathogens (norovirus, SARS-CoV-2, etc.) and environmental toxicants (PFAS and nanoplastics) are the main targets of interest. In addition, smartphone-based microbiome analyses are also actively being investigated for soil, gut, and skin samples. Machine learning techniques are the key elements in analyzing the high-dimensional data from these platforms. Finally, organ-on-a-chip is also being developed to study the implications of various environmental toxicants (PFAS and nanoplastics) on human organs.
Environmental research interests - Medical diagnostics; Environmental monitoring; Handheld LAMP and PCR; Organ-on-a-chip
