Susan V. Lynch, PhD
Professor of Medicine
Director, UCSF Benioff Center for Microbiome Medicine
University of California San Francisco

This Friday will mark our much-coveted introduction to the microbiome and its role in health and disease... and what an introduction it will be, since our speaker is going to be Susan Lynch, an outstanding microbiome scientist and one of the most compelling proponents of the integration between microbes, their ecology and function, and human health...

In a sweeping series of high-profile papers, Sue is showing how transmission of microbes from the pregnant mother, combined with environmental microbial exposures early in life, modulates microbiome function and composition, immune development and disease susceptibility in the child in ways that persist years and years later. Her command of microbial ecology and understanding of cutting-edge technology gives Susan unique tools to chart new ground in these all-important, rapidly evolving areas.... and her ability to work with both basic biologists and clinicians is breaking down traditional boundaries, expanding the impact of microbiome research to an unprecedented extent... not to mention that her passion for her field is immediately evident and ... well, quite infectious (!)
