SWEHSC Summer Staff

This summer, Community Engagement Core (CEC) hosted 4 summer programs designed to introduce students from middle school through community college to environmental health, research, grant writing, and professional development. To facilitate and run these programs, several student workers and interns collaborated with CEC to efficiently manage the programs and provide a fun experience for all students. Below is an introduction to each student worker and intern, who have shared their experiences with the CEC summer programs. We appreciate and value these students for all their hard work and dedication!

Student Workers

  1. Madelyn Yakubow
    • Hi! My name is Madelyn Yakubow, and I am going into my senior year. I am majoring in microbiology with a minor in anthropology. In my free time, I enjoy hiking, cooking, yoga, and hanging out with my friends. I am one of the student workers helping with the summer programs. Throughout the summer, I have taken on a variety of tasks, such as giving presentations, developing curriculum, and helping wherever I am needed. My favorite part of the summer programs is seeing the final student projects at the end of each program.

  1. Fabiola Urrea Salazar
    • My name is Fabiola Urrea. I study Public Health with a minor in Spanish, and I am also pursuing a career in medicine. I am part of the Honors College and serve as a Public Health Ambassador. In my free time, I enjoy reading books and spending time with my family and my little dog, Nala.

This summer, I helped create activities and presentations, and I also assisted at events and prepared presentations. My favorite part of the summer was watching students learn about various branches of science. By the end of the program, I get excited when I hear them say they want to become doctors, scientists, or engineers. That shows how much they've grown through this program. We gave them the tools and knowledge to dream big.

This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to work with the SWEHSC team, where I further explored my interests in environmental health and research. Outside of academics, I enjoy mentoring younger students, exploring different cultures, and contributing to meaningful community-driven projects.

Student Interns

  1. Sara Kafi
    • Hello! My name is Sara Kafi, and I am an incoming senior majoring in Biology with an emphasis in Biomedical Sciences and a minor in Public Health. A couple of my hobbies include reading and enjoying good food. My role this summer was as an intern, and I primarily focused on creating lesson plans about environmental health that could be taught to students, as well as contributing to a booklet about Indigenous culture and agriculture. My favorite part of the program was getting to know all the new faces we taught this summer!

    • Hello, my name is Orion Kitzmiller, and I grew up in Tucson, Arizona. I am currently a Public Health Major at the University of Arizona. Then I will be going into my nursing degree after I graduate, but I plan to use my experience and knowledge in Public Health to help the community around me. While I was at this internship, I had a blast creating lesson plans and teaching children about Public Health matters that go on around the world.
